Should You Sign Up for MTD Early? The Case for Going Voluntary

Even if you earn under £50,000, you can sign up for MTD now. Over 100,000 people already have. Here's why early adopters say it's worth it.

You don't have to wait

If your income is below the current mandatory threshold, you can still opt in to Making Tax Digital voluntarily. And there are genuine reasons to consider it.

Over 100,000 sole traders and landlords signed up during HMRC's pilot phase, with more than 15,000 quarterly updates already submitted. These aren't people who were forced into it. They chose to.

Why go early?

See your tax position year-round. This is the biggest draw. Under the old system, you'd file in January and find out what you owed. Under MTD, your software gives you a running estimate of your tax bill throughout the year. No January surprises.

Build the habit before it's mandatory. The £30,000 threshold kicks in April 2027. The £20,000 threshold in April 2028. If you're anywhere near those numbers, MTD is coming for you. Getting used to it now, on your own terms, beats being thrown in at the deep end.

Dedicated support. HMRC has a dedicated MTD Customer Support Team for people using the service. During the voluntary period, you can access this support while demand is lower than it will be once millions of people are mandated.

Better financial visibility. Knowing where you stand financially throughout the year is useful for actual business decisions. Should you take on that extra project? Can you afford to buy new equipment? When your records are up to date, you can answer these questions with actual numbers instead of guesses.

Who should consider it?

Voluntary sign-up makes the most sense if:

  • Your income is between £20,000 and £50,000 and you'll be mandated within the next two years anyway
  • You already keep digital records and the switch would be minimal effort
  • You're curious about how quarterly filing works and want a low-pressure trial run
  • You want to see your estimated tax bill in real time

Who should probably wait?

If your income is well below £20,000, MTD might never apply to you (HMRC hasn't committed to thresholds below £20k). And if your record-keeping is currently a mess, you might want to sort that out first before adding quarterly filing into the mix.

How to sign up

You can register for MTD for Income Tax through your Government Gateway account on GOV.UK. You'll need:

  • Your Government Gateway login
  • Your National Insurance number
  • Your business start date
  • MTD-compatible software set up and ready

Once you're signed up, you start filing quarterly updates just like the mandated group. The difference is that if you decide it's not for you, you can opt out (though HMRC would rather you didn't).

Worth it?

Nobody loves more admin. But quarterly filing gives you something the annual system never did: a clear view of your finances as they unfold. If MTD is heading your way regardless, and it probably is, there's a strong case for getting started on your own terms rather than waiting to be pushed.

Not sure if you're even in scope? Check who MTD applies to and the full exemptions list. If the thresholds are dropping towards your income, early adoption starts looking sensible.
